What You Can't See
One of the coolest features of apps like Google Maps is the ability to switch your view.
If you're trying to get someplace specific, you can use the default map view and see the exact roads to take. You get an overhead, bird's-eye look at the whole journey.
If you just want to wander around a neighborhood and see what's there, you can switch to street view. There, you can go step by step to "walk" down a particular street.
A huge challenge in running a business is that we don't often have that same toggle available.
Our default as entrepreneurs is street view.
We are stuck seeing only what tasks are in front of us right now.
If we have done the work to map out a complete journey, that's not a bad view. In fact, it keeps us focused on making manageable progress each day.
In the absence of a strong plan, though, we end up wandering around, often going in circles without realizing it.
The magic happens when you have a clear map of the route from where you are to your goal, and a step-by-step plan to get you there.
