The Bird Trick for Finding Leads

A few years ago, I went deep-sea fishing and learned a valuable business lesson from the boat captain.

As our merry crew of would-be fishermen headed out of port into the wide-open ocean, I asked the captain how the heck we were going to find schools of fish that were hidden beneath the water?

I figured he would tell me about some fancy technology that could see underwater and find them.

Instead, he said simply, "Look for the birds."

If you're wondering what the heck birds have to do with fishing, you're right where I was at the time.

Seeing my puzzled look, the captain told me that the birds are scanning the water's surface for signs of schools of small fish they feast on.

It turns out the big fish are looking up at the surface for those same schools for the same reason.

So, if we find birds circling an area, we move the boat underneath them and cast our lines.

That particular day, we came home with 27 mahi, a sailfish, and some wahoo.

The bird trick worked spectacularly.

In your business, your ideal clients are the big fish... hungry and looking up.

But you don't find them by swimming around hoping to bump into them.

You look for the birds.

What other people are they listening to?

What communities are they gathering in?

What questions are they typing into Google at 11 pm?

What are they asking ChatGPT?

Those are your birds — circling right above a school of your best future clients.

Once you know where the birds are, you move your boat underneath them.

You show up in those spaces, you create the small fish — the content, the free resources, the conversations — that your ideal client is already hungry for.

Stop searching the open ocean.

Find your birds first.
