1992-1994 Silver Toyota Camry Sedan

Selling Cars Taught Me Nothing About Selling Coaching

August 24, 20262 min read

My first sales job was selling Toyotas in 1994.

And, frankly, selling cars was pretty easy.

People came into the dealership looking for a vehicle. They already knew they had a problem they wanted to solve.

Then I got to show them real, tangible options that they could experience for themselves on a test drive.

Heck, they could even take the car home for a few days to make sure they wanted it.

Fun fact: if you could get a prospect to put the car in their driveway, the sale was 99.99% guaranteed.

As long as the sales manager didn't screw up the deal during negotiations, I was getting a commission check.

Then I left the dealership to sell insurance.

What a night-and-day difference.

Suddenly I was selling an invisible product.

In fact, something terrible had to happen in a person's life for them to get any benefit from it.

But they paid for it every month anyway.

Selling intangibles with future outcomes that have no guaranteed date is hard. Really hard.

That's why selling coaching is so tough.

You're selling ideas, as-yet-unexperienced transformations, and concepts, not things.

Luckily, there is a book you can read that lays out how to sell coaching, step by step.

And I can get you a copy at no charge.

Download Leadsology: The Science of Being In Demand by Tom Poland as my gift to you.

You don't have to go sell insurance to learn how to sell coaching. You can just read the book.

Let me know what you think when you've read it.
