Larger Tolerances

In woodworking, we use the term 'tolerance' to describe how big a gap is allowable in a joint.

If I'm making a finely crafted small box, the tolerance might be very small. There are only a few visible joints, so any gap will be noticed.

If I'm building a complex coffee table, I will have a much larger tolerance because there are so many different joints that no one will notice a small gap in one.

Creating a very small gap requires a lot of time and precision. In many cases, it involves specialized tools and a great deal of experience to use them properly.

And, here's the rub... the craftsman is likely the only one to ever see a gap in a joint anyway, because he's the only one who notices that level of detail.
