Are You Setting Yourself Up For A Painful Fall?

You gotta love summer – it’s vacation time for most of the country. In fact, I just got back from two weeks in Bali myself. There is nothing like traveling outside your everyday world to give yourself a fresh perspective and recharge your batteries.

But there is a downside to summertime.

The trouble starts when the kids get out of school. Next, everyone you know starts talking about their upcoming vacations. After that, all your Facebook friends are posting pictures of their families at the beach or Disney World. Your neighbors begin telling funny travel stories that happened on their latest trip. Everywhere you turn, life revolves around vacation.

Before you know it, you’ve got summer fever.

Summer fever is an insidious disease. Its symptoms include:

  • Lower sales and profits
  • Weak or empty sales pipelines
  • Unfocused employees
  • Delayed and over-budget projects
  • Uneven cash flow

When everyone else is on vacation it is easy for your business to slow down and coast. It’s easy for salespeople to make the excuse that “it is summer – no one is in their office”. It is common for employees to slow down before their own vacation and take their time easing back into work after they return. A one-week official vacation can quickly turn into three weeks of non-productivity.

As a professional, you can’t afford to catch summer fever.

If you want to beat the competition and go into the fall in a position of strength, you have to fight the fever and work just as hard now as you do at other times of the year. If you don’t want to fall behind and have to scramble to hit your goals, you have to focus. Now.

One simple way I’ve found to combat summer fever is to double-down on learning. Webinars, books and classes can reignite your passion and reengage your motivation to succeed. They will give you new ideas to get you out of your rut.
