3 Quick Tips For Accomplishing Your Resolutions This Year

2009-01-11 06.13.10-2

It’s that time of year when many of us set our annual goals. At New Year’s we call them resolutions.

I love the term resolution because it comes from the word resolve meaning, “to make a definite and serious decision to do something.”

Definite and serious. Wow, those are powerful qualifiers.

If you are making resolutions this year, here are three quick ways to ensure you keep them.

Five Is the Limit
I know you’re excited about changing everything for 2015. But making too many resolutions is a recipe for failure. Limit your goals to just 5 and it will be easier to focus on them individually.

I like to set goals in five areas – financial, health, social, family and spiritual with one goal in each category.

Start Slowly
If you have ever been to the gym on January 2nd, you’ve seen hordes of out of shape people engaging in intense exercise. Those same people are the ones who give up their resolutions by the end of the week when they are so sore and tired they can barely get out of bed.

Instead of overdoing it the first week, start out with very small goals. If your resolution is to lose weight and going to the gym regularly is an action, start out with two weekly visits to the gym for the first two weeks. Let your body acclimate to working out. You can increase to three days in week three and then to four days in week eight.
By easing into your goals, you will limit the amount of overwhelm and set yourself up for success.

Get Action-Oriented
Oftentimes we set a goal but don’t really think through the specific actions necessary to accomplish it. For example, you might have a resolution to be a better parent.

Take time to write the actions that will make your resolution happen such as spending one hour per day engaging in play with your child or eating dinner at the table as a family four nights per week.

The important thing is to be able to see in your mind what the actions look like. Imagine a short video clip of you doing the action that will lead to your success.
